Summer

A change in the season can mean a change in skin, especially for those with rosacea. Summer is associated with time outdoors, enjoying outdoor activities, family vacations and more. Rosacea can quickly become inflamed or acne rosacea may begin. By understanding what may trigger a flareup and products to have at home, you can enjoy summer without looking red, flushed and inflamed.

POSSIBLE FLAREUP CULPRITS
Rosacea skin is naturally prone to flushing, redness, and heat, spending time outside can make it worse.  A survey conducted by the National Rosacea Society stated over 60% of rosacea sufferers mentioned their top culprit for flareups was sun exposure, and over 50% said the heat of summer was their culprit. Wearing
a hat, avoiding the sun during peak hours (10a-2p), and staying in the shade or under a large umbrella can all help lessen the chances of a flareup  .Humidity is also a trigger, especially for those prone to breakouts of acne rosacea. Humidity and heat create a breeding ground for negative pathogens to thrive.  Keeping skin clean and after a sweat session, washing your face twice daily is key to preventing a flareup.  Summer and the pool seem to go hand-in-hand
;however, most pools are chlorinated and contain many chemicals which may be a trigger. Reduce the risk of a flareup or over-drying the skin by rinsing off with fresh water as soon as you come out of the pool.

ADDITIONAL TIPS TO HELP ROSACEA SKIN
• Drink plenty of water! Add ice to make it even
more refreshing
• Limit alcohol consumption
• Boost your antioxidants – Increase your fresh
fruits and veggies
• Limit your outdoor activities to earlier
mornings or evenings when the sun and heat
are less intense
• Wear mineral-based sun protectants like Sun
Reflect’s Daytime Defense

Eczema

Eczema impacts more than 30 million Americans, and while this skin disease brings discomfort to sufferers, it also has an impact on confidence and self-esteem, depending on how severe the flareup is. Living with eczema and treating other skin concerns, like aging, may seem like daunting but with Compromised Barrier, one can reduce flareups, strengthen skin and slow aging.

ECZEMA VS PSORIASIS

Eczema and psoriasis are commonly confused as both appear very similar in the skin. Both conditions appear
on the elbows, knees, backs of knees, hands and neck and can lead to extreme cases where the skin becomes cracked. With psoriasis the skin will often feel like it is burning or stinging, and silvery plaques begin to form, especially during severe flareups. Specific causes are not fully understood for either however, physicians believe it may be hereditary, associated with other internal issues including auto-immune diseases, allergies and even rosacea. Both are linked to internal stress as well.

INGREDIENTS TO INCORPORATE

The goal with skin impacted by eczema is to heal, nourish, hydrate and strengthen. Anti-inflammatory ingredients offer incredible benefits. Let’s explore some of the must-have ingredients when addressing this condition.  Omega Essential Fatty Acids, known as EFA’s, promote healing and hydration to compromised skin. Linoleic acid plays a crucial role in skin regeneration and facilitates the penetration of other actives into the skin. It also reduces inflammation. Oleic acid is an occlusive oil that locks in hydration and reduces Trans Epidermal Water Loss (TEWL), while strengthening the cell membrane integrity, promoting skin repair and hydration.

Hyaluronic Acid is a principle water-regulating molecule and offers many benefits to eczema and compromised skin. L-Sodium Hyaluronate is the purest form of hyaluronic acid and assists in the removal of waster matter from cells, reverses free radical damage, prevents TEWL and increases hydration. Goat Milk is rich in nutrients and has a similar pH to the skin, meaning it is effective in being absorbed and restoring hydration to skin. It is also known as a natural
soother, reducing inflammation.  Mandelic Acid may not be an ingredient one thinks of when it comes to eczema, however it provides gentle rejuvenation without causing dryness or irritation.  Classified as an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), its molecular structure is much larger than another popular AHA, lactic acid. By having a larger structure, it penetrates slowly into the skin, reducing inflammation and irritation. This ingredient also provides anti-bacterial
properties which is needed when skin is compromised and susceptible to pathogens.

Home Care

Daily home care should start simple, 3 steps in the AM and PM. As the skin continues to strengthen and rebuild, we look at adding formulas that slow the aging process.

Cleanse skin both morning and evening with Soothing Cream Cleanse. A blend of goat milk, refined shea butter and rose flower water soothe, hydrate and gently cleanse skin.  In the mornings, apply a building and strengthening serum, like Sensitive Skin Complex, which has an analgesic effect to reduce discomfort and is loaded with antioxidants.

In the evenings, we want to gently rejuvenate skin, Mandelic Repair Serum offers many benefits. It contains pyruvic acid to help boost cellular energy, much needed when skin is under constant attack, and l-arginine to promote healing.

Hydration is key and we have a lot of options to consider. Start any hydration routine with Hydra Soothe Spritz, giving skin a drink of water.   Next, a lipid-based hydrator like Omega Hydration or Vital Replenish Serum will lock in moisture, reduce inflammation and repair the barrier function.

Bringing in our Skin Rehab Calming Skin Gel can relive itching and irritation as well and offers great support during flareups.

Make Your Summer Cool, Protected, and Safe!

The summer months are filled with fun activities, many of which are outdoors. Staying protected from the damaging effects of UVrays is important all year long but especially during summertime.  .Let’s refresh some of the most important ways to protect your skin this season.

THE SUN’S NOT SO BEAUTIFUL RAYS

The sun’s UV ray
s may feel warm and many like the sun-kissed, bronzed color after exposure, but these rays contain harmful waves. UVB rays are shorter wavelengths and are known as the “burn” rays. UVB rays are responsible for pre-cancerous and cancerous cells in the skin. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. It is estimated that one in every five Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetime.

If developing cancer was not enough of a reason to protect your skin, remember that 90% of photo aging comes from UV exposure. UVA rays are longer wavelengths and are responsible for wrinkles, fine lines, brown spots, loss of elasticity and firmness in the skin. UVA rays reach deep within the skin to the dermal layer where the abundance of free radicals damages the collagen fibers. Due to this damage skin experiences abnormal amounts of collagen and elastin, in addition to an increase in matrix metalloproteinases.

Matrix Metalloproteinases or MMP’s, are enzymes the body naturally creates to break down old, degraded collagen and elastin fibers. However, with an overabundance of MMP’s you see the breakdown of healthy collagen and elastin fibers. This malfunction leads to challenges in the rebuilding of the skin and wrinkles start to form.

DEFEND YOUR SKIN  So, what does one do to protect the skin? To begin with, applying a mineral-based sun protection formula is key! Minerals not only sit on the skin reflecting harmful UV rays off, but they are broad spectrum. This means they block both UVA and UVB rays.

Look for products with an SPF up to 30. Products that contain a higher SPF like 50, 75 or even 100, contain chemical sun protectants, known to increase the risk of cancers and other endocrine disruption in the body.  In addition, these higher SPF ratings amount to a very small protection increase after SPF 30.

Daytime Defense is your mineral-based SPF 30 equivalent formula and the one we strongly suggest when spending time outdoors this summer. It is a zinc oxide-based formula with additional botanicals for antioxidant protection and to reduce inflammation. It is great for all skin types and even babies!

eZinc Protection is another great formula to consider this summer. With an SPF equivalent of 22, the lightweight, refreshing citrus aroma lifts the senses plus it is loaded with antioxidants and soothing turmeric extract.
