Sunscreen

Daily sun protection has become one of the most important
conversations in skin care — and for good reason. Consistent sun protection use helps defend the skin against premature aging, discoloration, and long-term environmental damage caused by UV exposure. But not all formulas are created equally.

Sun protection formulas generally fall into two
categories: physical sun protectants and chemical sun
protectants. Understanding the difference can help
you make more informed choices about what you apply
to your skin every day.

Physical sun protectants use naturally derived mineral
ingredients that sit on the surface of the skin and help
reflect UVA and UVB rays before they penetrate the
skin. These ingredients are often preferred for their
gentle nature and broad-spectrum protection.
Zinc oxide is one of the most respected ingredients
available due to its broad-spectrum UV protection
and skin-supportive properties. In addition to helping
shield the skin from harmful UV exposure, zinc oxide
is known for being soothing, anti-microbial, and anti
inflammatory.

Chemical sun protectants work differently than
mineral sunscreens. Rather than reflecting UV rays,
these ingredients absorb UV radiation and convert it
into heat, which is then released from the skin. In recent
years, certain chemical sunscreen ingredients have
come under increased scrutiny due to environmental
and skin sensitivity concerns.

Common chemical sunscreen ingredients include:
• Oxybenzone
• Avobenzone
• Octisalate
• Octocrylene
• Octinoxate
• Homosalate
• Menthyl Anthranilate
• Ethylhexyl Salicylate

Application is key with any sun protection! This is where
physical sun protectants are excellent as they start
defending the skin upon application. Make sure during
extended outdoor times, or when you are swimming or
sweating you are re-applying your sun protection every
80 minutes.
